The Stay at Balik Pulau

A six-room stay on the western side of the island, set within an existing kampung-style compound. The brief was to extend the hospitality of the surrounding village rather than import a hotel language onto it.

Each of the six rooms shares the same plan and the same three materials but differs in orientation, framing, and the specific tree visible from the bed. Public spaces — a long covered verandah, a single shared kitchen, a reading room — sit between the rooms, deliberately under-furnished. Lighting is warm, low, and almost entirely indirect.
